The retaining wall is made of packed tires stacked in a running-bond pattern to maximize interlocking between courses. Tires are filled with the earth taken out during the excavation stage, and non-biodegradable waste. There is a batter of 4” between each course of tires and the wall has a total height of 18.5’. Nylon ropes are used once every four courses to tie the tires of a course together.
The space between the undisturbed soil and the tires is filled with sand. In order to drain, water goes through the sand before reaching a sloped gravel trench at the bottom of the wall where lays a drainage pipe made of plastic sheeting. The water then reaches the lowest point of the pipe where a concrete drain tile crosses the wall.
